I have an accountability partner. Shari Sherman. We’ve been checking in with each other for the last six years. This week I committed to making an encaustic piece a day. Today I worked on a small piece today. I love those lone trees in the middle of a vast field. I call them witness trees. Who knows what they have seen as they’ve grown over the years. Imagine a 200 year old lifespan.
A lone tree guy was here cutting down the rest of the poplar leftover from the crew. This guy cut down this giant tree by himself. A matter of physics, spatial relations and just plain genius. Lots of chain sawing.
I have a plan for this witness tree piece. More to come…
I think this is a much stronger piece today. It was too sterile with the font so organized (yet not with the kerning issue…it’s a graphic designer thing).
I’m using a heat gun. The trick is to kiss the heat to the wax. If you look at your piece at an angle where the light is on the piece you’re fusing, you can see the wax become wet and then you are done. No need to keep heating after that. I was using a heat gun. I have used a small brûlée torch and it was great. One time I didn’t realize it was off because it was so quiet and burned the side of my hand. Uh…Ouch! I would like to use a bigger torch eventually, but I would need to learn how to use it confidently. I’ll probably go get a refill for my little torch so I can do some shellac burns (eyes widen with excitement).

Connection stayed in my mind the entire time I worked on this piece. Not just because of these trees, but because of crows. I learned from a dear soul friend that when crows gather on your house after someone has passed, it is a sign of your ancestors. Every time we head south the trees at the LYH airport stand tall and pose for me. I anticipate them and I hope for a good shot while we’re moving. I imagine their root systems touching each other like their branches do. Very magical.
I’m connecting with my encaustic medium again and it’s speaking to me.

Encaustic medium allows me to create interesting work with texture and layers that I love. I want to keep my creative habit going. I haven’t worked with encaustic in six months. I see it waiting for me everyday. Today is the day.
This is a small experiment with a photo in black and white, printed on my laser printer. I rubbed the photo onto the wax, wet it and pulled the paper off. This is a hot mess (encaustic joke).
- I learned that you have to rub very hard for the image to transfer.
- When printing, you have to flip the image.
- High contrast is best.
- It doesn’t matter what you put under the image in terms of color.
- When you put wax over the top, you have to use a BIG brush or you will get globs.
- You will need several transparent layers of wax or in reheating the newly applied wax, the printed transfer will FLOAT! Argh.

We have started our painting outdoors for the summer! Nancy, Terri and I went out to Seaman’s Orchard where you can pick your own strawberries, blueberries and cherries. The other fruit you can pick isn’t ready yet, but all of the above are delicious! Blueberries should be really ready soon. Really a beautiful setting and the views…….
If I’m going to be honest, I’ve been in an artistic bump in the road. I’ve been taking a lot of classes and really learning. The classes leave my mind full and excited. I hadn’t used my pastels or been outdoor painting for over a year and I was RUSTY! All my new found knowledge and now I don’t know how to paint anymore. That ugly FEAR that sits on your shoulder, landed on mine and the only thing I have been painting with is GESSO. I have started one painting of this tower at our local high school and I’m on the third Gesso rendition. In the case of my pastels, I brushed off the pigment and I sprayed alcohol on pages of pastel paintings to be painted over. In my encaustic paintings, I’ve been melting whatever I put down and starting over. Just fusing layers of light grey onto a substrate.

I am pushing through it. I’ve been here before and got through it to be very successful in my career.
This was the first painting I have felt good about in over a month. There’s still work to be done.

I’m the featured artist at the Renaissance Theatre this May and for First Friday tonight! In honor of the play Hair, I’ll be showing my flowers on cigar boxes in encaustics medium. Also hanging will be my plein air pastel paintings of the Peaks of Otter.
The Lynchburg Art Club will be showing the paintings from Paint Out Lynchburg. I have two paintings there. It will be exciting to see who won. It’s like being at a race. My heart pounds waiting to hear the results.
Also, my newly painted acrylic paintings are hanging at the Academy Center of the Arts, Arts & Education Lobby, located in the Warehouse Theatre. It’s Kenny Weinfurtner’s class I’ve been taking and learning so much. Everything is available for purchase. This is a short story on how this painting got its’ name. It began in 1981. When photos were taken with film cameras.
While some people might think that New Mexico looks like a great big brown baked potato, I think otherwise. Colors in the rocks, the sunsets, and landscape. Magnificent.
The painting started out as “The Draw” based on Blackwater Draw in New Mexcio. It landed on the canvas in 2011 with a monochrome under painting of burnt umber. I started it upside down because the perspective was challenging me. This way my brain would only see shapes. Other colors were going to be added, but we moved. And moved again. I kind of liked it with the one color.
2015 – This painting wanted attention. Encaustic wax called to me. I brushed the wax over the top very lightly and only heated it enough to adhere the layers. The sand is silica from those little packets that come in pills. In writing on the very last layer is “New Mexico is a great big brown baked potato” in oil pastels. This piece flowed out of me and I enjoyed the process.
