I’m the featured artist at the Renaissance Theatre this May and for First Friday tonight! In honor of the play Hair, I’ll be showing my flowers on cigar boxes in encaustics medium. Also hanging will be my plein air pastel paintings of the Peaks of Otter.
The Lynchburg Art Club will be showing the paintings from Paint Out Lynchburg. I have two paintings there. It will be exciting to see who won. It’s like being at a race. My heart pounds waiting to hear the results.
Also, my newly painted acrylic paintings are hanging at the Academy Center of the Arts, Arts & Education Lobby, located in the Warehouse Theatre. It’s Kenny Weinfurtner’s class I’ve been taking and learning so much. Everything is available for purchase. Sales benefit the Academy Center of the Arts, Renaissance Theatre and of course, me. #FFLYH #downtownlynchburg #Academycenterofthearts #renaissancetheatre #encaustic #cigarboxes #pastelpaintings #lynchburgartclub #paintoutlynchburg
The Dandelion seeding
This tree always seemed to be in the way of the moutain. I let it take center stage and it bowed.
I was in the shade most of the day. My snack was a boiled egg and that little sucker popped out of my hand and started rolling down the sidewalk. Argh. Don’t judge me. I rinsed it off and ate it like that pack of dogs in A Christmas Story. I think the term starving artists came out of how hungry you get when you’re creating. Between paintings I went to the Community Market for some meat on a stick! Sat in the sun. Glorious! Food, water, sun. What else is there, except for art! Too many exclamations?! This is the final of Mrs. Joys Absolutely Fabulous Treats. Such a bright palette. After loosening up on The Virginian Hotel painting, this one really flowed. Enjoy. #mrsjoysabsolutelyfabuloustreats #pleinairpainting #pastels #paintoutlynchburg
I painted outside today after almost a year. I hadn’t touched my pastels either. I’ve been using acrylics. I felt rusty. I felt like I was overworking the painting. I even put a light pole right in the middle of the painting. What?! After getting rid of that and just trying to loosen up and enjoy the process I feel that I came up with a finished piece. The Virginian Hotel is being restored and it’s beautiful inside and out.

I was asked to draw this sweet little guy as a thank you gift. I had a separate photo of the sign which was in a yard and the puppy was in the house. I did a quick sketch to get a layout with pup holding the logo and here’s the final drawing.

Our altered art journal group met today and we exchanged books. This book is themed “migration.” I remember seeing a documentary about how Monarch butterflies migrate. There was this fantastic video of Monarch butterflies covering everything. I imagined myself there with all the colors and wings fanning each other. All of them communicating somehow. Wings causing a storm somewhere in the world. To stand in the middle of all that….with my T-shirt heralding my superpower on it. The giant “I” of invisibility. I even put a 3-D butterfly to give it dimension.
Argh. After finishing the other train station painting, I went back to this one. My brush stokes were all over the place. The brick work was messy, the people inside were too big for the space and it didn’t have enough depth. Nothing was standing out. Now I feel there’s more focus on the people and the cart.
It’s funny how you can create something and you think you’re done. Then you grow in your experience and your mind expands. Looking back, I think what was I thinking? How did I think I was done and it was all that?
I’m being entirely objective here. If you can’t stand back and look at your work with a discerning eye, how can you get any better? More than anything, I’m enjoying the process.
I can’t wait ’til spring when I can go paint outdoors. Perhaps my new mind’s eye will be as expansive the view.
It’s snowing today. I’ll be picking out one of my photos for my next painting. Enjoy.

The one I thought was a finished painting.
Work in Progress. Make sure your easel is level when working with straight lines.
Underpainting with cerulean blue. I will start with burnt sienna or burnt umber from now on.
I’m working with the shadows now. Adding cerulean blue and ultramarine blue. I see where I need to correct my values in the second picture where the blue light is on the floor. Overall, I’m enjoying the process of relearning basics and seeing the lights and darks. #alwayslearning #beginnermind #artist #ceruleanblue #ultramarineblue
