Fixing the painting and done

Painting

Argh. After finishing the other train station painting, I went back to this one. My brush stokes were all over the place. The brick work was messy, the people inside were too big for the space and it didn’t have enough depth. Nothing was standing out. Now I feel there’s more focus on the people and the cart.

It’s funny how you can create something and you think you’re done. Then you grow in your experience and your mind expands. Looking back, I think what was I thinking? How did I think I was done and it was all that?

I’m being entirely objective here. If you can’t stand back and look at your work with a discerning eye, how can you get any better? More than anything, I’m enjoying the process.

I can’t wait ’til spring when I can go paint outdoors. Perhaps my new mind’s eye will be as expansive the view.

It’s snowing today. I’ll be picking out one of my photos for my next painting. Enjoy.

Finished Painting

The one I thought was a finished painting.

Work in Progress. Make sure your easel is level when working with straight lines.

Underpainting with cerulean blue. I will start with burnt sienna or burnt umber from now on.

I’m calling this painting done!

Painting

The train station in the very early morning hour. This painting took longer than any painting I’ve ever done. I think I finally understand values and how important they are. I think I will stay in this lane for quite some time. In the meantime I’m going to study colors. Mixing, creating good greys and generally making friends with color. I loved the entire process. I think I’ve discovered true patience in creating.

Here are the steps again

Teaching encaustic painting

Encaustic Wax

Conducted a three-day workshop in Encaustics at V.E.S. this past week. The students were amazingly talented. On Friday I made a presentation to the entire school. A great week! @artwithmsthompson #artist #encausticart #encausticpainting #encausticartist #inspiration #creatingart #visitingteacher
